Let your child follow his passion and success will follow him…
They came, they saw, they conquered — through the sheer power of passion! Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, actor-director Farhan Akhtar and Apple Inc. co-founder and chairman Steve Jobs were born in different decades and in different places but became successful in diverse fields, only through sheer passion and perseverance.
A bank official’s son – Sanjeev Kapoor was born in Ambala and studied in different schools across the country as he followed his father who was often transferred from one city to another. He even studied in a girls’ school and learnt stitching before developing an interest in biology and finally discovering his forte through a friend who introduced him to hotel management. He moved on to become a prolific author of cook books and a television icon. Farhan Akhtar, son of a celebrity couple – writer Javed Akhtar and actress Honey Irani, dropped out of HR College (Commerce) before his stint as an assistant director and unit hand for film and TV production companies. He went on to producing his own film “Dil Chahta Hai” with his friend Ritesh Sidhwani, dabbling in lyric writing and even establishing himself as an acclaimed actor in “Rock On”. On the other hand, Steve Jobs, the son of a Syrian Muslim and an American student,, was adopted by foster parents and frequented after-school lectures at Hewlett-Packard before dropping out of Reed College after one semester to do a calligraphy course. Now you know how the Apple Mac got its multiple and proportional typefaces! All these people had tremendous passion and the spirit to back their true calling, after discovering it.
The trio started developing their passion to make a mark in the 70s, 80s and 90s! Today in the new millennium, such opportunities have increased manifold and it is crucial for parents to be aware of such varied and off-beat career options. However, along with this insight, parents need to have the knowledge and awareness that there are specific tools that combine science and art to help identify passion. This could help parents provide guidance to children, and encourage them to identify and follow their passion for achieving a successful career.
Passion exists in every child
Children develop interests and passions at an early age. Whether it is playing cricket or solving complex math problems, all kids have a knack for doing something exceptionally well. As a parent, you should find out what your child’s passions are at an early age. By exposing your child to different activities such as sports, drawing, academics, music, cooking, photography, animation, fashion designing or aviation, you open a channel for them to express themselves in a positive and self-fulfilling way.
Even in your child, you will often see flashes of passion to do something different.! Don’t ignore it but recognise and nurture it. Remember — everyone is born with certain qualities and is good in doing something. This is what is called their forte! India’s greatest cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s family recognised his forte at a very early age and nurtured it inspite of middle class bearings. At that point of time, cricket wasn’t the money spinning proposition it has become today. But Tendulkar’s family supported his passion and without realising that he would become a brand worth hundreds of crores!
Identifying passion is a science and art
In the earlier days, identifying a child’s passion or interest was a purely instinctive or impulsive decision often taken by the parents or relatives. Remember the film “3 Idiots” where the youngsters Farhan Qureshi (played by R. Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (played by Sharman Joshi) spend their lives resenting the choices that their parents made when they were born and thrust the same forcibly upon them? Rancchoddas “Rancho” Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan) inspires ‘engineer’ Farhan Qureshi to take up wildlife photography, which he is truly passionate about! In today’s world, identifying passion is not a subjective matter but a science and art. There are scientific methods and platforms available that can help you determine a child’s passions by identifying the intelligence (IQ), spiritual (SQ) and emotional (EQ) quotients of a child.
Today, the career explosion in India has made the lives of parents more complicated and stressful. The world has changed completely from the days of “doctors” or “engineers” and several alternate career options have flourished, which were unimaginable some years ago! For example,television channels today are full of reality shows revolving around children and youth. Abhijeet Sawant and Rahul Vaidya from ‘Indian Idol’ have become household names! Meiyang Chang, the shy Indian Idol participant quickly became an Indian Idol host, then an IPL host and now an actor starring with superstar Shahid Kapoor in Yashraj Films ‘Badmaash Company.
Experts can nurture passion
It’s difficult to write a career plan for your child as it can be an important step in identifying or reaffirming their goals in life. You need an expert counsellor or career guide to create career plans, which can give young ones direction in their course of study. Career development plans created by specialists are beneficial because they give a sense of direction and purpose. These experts evaluate parents and children; identify interests, values, personal needs and goals. This routine helps parents/ children better understand the career they will chose or will choose; and how it can be tailored to them specifically. They will help you match yourself with a goal career. They can help you evaluate each option, identify any alternatives, and look at your short- and long-term options. They help you decide, which career is best suited for you by narrowing down your occupational choices.
A renowned child counsellor often advises parents, “Tell your children that in life, the only thing that can keep them going is that they have to love what they do. You have to help them find what they love.” The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
Grooming children for their careers
Preparing your child for a career is not a one step process, carried out by one person. Many people influence career decisions – friends, family members, healthcare providers, teachers counsellors and peers – it’s a developmental process. Encourage informal conversations about career choices. Exploring different activities with your child, even as young as age 3-4, can insure a lifelong and endearing relationship between your child and their passions, which can thereby become a springboard for a satisfying career. It is more likely that they will become experts in what they do than if they start at an older age.
Parents should motivate children to achieve career success, develop the right mindset, courageous, never give-up, great vision, identify the hidden great talents in them, follow their right dream, take note of a child’s hobbies and passions, and encourage them that hard work and passion for excellence are always the master key to success. If you help your children develop these qualities, you will be giving them essential tools for life success, courage to face the challenges of the world economy, the obligation of civil responsibility, and the responsibility of attaining their educational goals.
Once the career path is defined, there is a need for getting in financial planners and advisors who can help parents save for the various significant milestones in their academic and professional choices.
The value of passion for a successful career has been widely recognized. Passion is the key to your child’s successful career. Help your child to dream high and become emotionally engaged with their own passions and their dreams! As they say, “Follow your passion and success will follow you!”
